Ryan Argast is the powerhouse frontman of the genre bending band Marina City. After his debut solo effort “Vows,” Argast continued to write intimately, discovering more stories he felt compelled to share.
“When the world shut down I felt emotional. I had two choices; let my emotions swallow me whole or write about them. I wrote a lot but there were songs that didn’t feel right for Marina City. They were too personal for me to hide behind my bandmates.
Where most frontmen would use this time to take a break, Argast couldn’t stay still. Writing 2 EPs for Marina City and exploring a solo record Argast has never been more creative.
Though “Vows” was a song written for his wife to walk down the aisle, “Empty Chair” is arguably more personal. Wielding his signature raw and emotional vocals, “Empty Chair” feels like a conversation Argast never intended to be publicized. Argast goes as far as using his brother and wife’s real names in the lyrics to inform his grandfather on everyone's lives after he passed away in 2015.
“Our entire family dynamic changed after my grandfather passed away. So much has changed and I wish I could tell him. The song is about the feeling of zoning out, staring at an Empty Chair, and talking to him about the changes." Argast says about the new single.
“Empty Chair” is one of many exclusive songs Argast will release in 2022. “These songs are painfully personal but I’m ready to open myself up. This is who I am alone with my thoughts.”
