Ryan “Ryu” Maginn is an American rapper, songwriter, and producer best known as a founding member of the acclaimed hip-hop group Styles of Beyond and as a collaborator with Fort Minor, the solo project of Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda.
Born on June 10, 1975, Ryu emerged from the Los Angeles underground scene in the mid-1990s, forming Styles of Beyond alongside Takbir Bashir (Tak), DJ Cheapshot, and producer Vin Skully. The group quickly became known for its sharp lyricism and forward-thinking production, earning recognition through early radio appearances on The Wake-Up Show and acclaimed releases such as 2000 Fold (1998), Megadef (2003), and Reseda Beach (2012).
Ryu gained mainstream attention through his work with Fort Minor, appearing on the platinum single “Remember the Name” and other tracks from The Rising Tied (2005). Beyond Styles of Beyond, he co-founded Get Busy Committee with Apathy and producer Scoop DeVille, releasing the cult-favorite album Uzi Does It (2009).
As a solo artist, Ryu continues to explore personal and reflective themes in his music. His project Tanks for the Memories showcases his evolution as both a lyricist and storyteller, blending introspection with the sharp wit and authenticity that has defined his career.
Outside of music, Ryu finds balance between his artistic pursuits and community work. He is also active as a mentor for emerging artists and an entrepreneur based in Southern California.
