Now at the start of his professional career, Safwan Nizam is driven by one clear goal: to become one of the greatest songwriters of all time.
Born and raised in Salford, Manchester, his earliest musical memory was insisting the classical radio station be playing while falling asleep, though he otherwise showed little musical inclination as a child. A move to Norway at thirteen set the stage for a late but intense awakening: At fifteen, he discovered drums, spending hours each day practicing rudiments on a six-inch practice pad in his laundry room. Zeppelin fueled his obsession, before jazz legends like Buddy Rich and Elvin Jones led him to McCoy Tyner’s piano playing on Coltrane’s "A Love Supreme". Practicing piano reconnected him with the classical composers he adored as a child and opened the door to future ambitions of writing for orchestra alongside his work in popular music.
By seventeen, Safwan added guitar and bass to his arsenal, however, it was songwriting that became his greatest love. “Songwriting is just binary decision making,” he says. “After thousands of hours, it comes down to keeping or throwing an idea—and trusting your taste.”
Starting October 3rd, the now-23-year-old will launch his career with Sounds From The Underground, his debut album rolled out as bi-weekly singles until February 2026. A genre-bending work of pop, post-rock, R&B, acoustic intimacy and even flamenco, it marks the arrival of a versatile and prolific new voice for the music world.
