Formed in 2016, RMXKNZ is a Los Angeles duo composed of Grammy-winning producers, songwriters and musicians Salvador Santana, the son of guitar virtuoso and Latin music icon Carlos Santana, and Asdrubal “Asdru” Sierra, the lead vocalist, trumpeter and pianist of Latin fusion band Ozomatli. Having met over 20 years ago, Salvador and Asdru now enter their next artistic journey as RMXKNZ, an eclectic collaborative project that pulls influences from their cultural heritage and multiethnic hometown.
As RMXKNZ, Salvador and Asdru create a diverse sound that spans genres, decades and cultures, while firmly rooted in the traditional sounds of the duo’s upbringing. A love letter to their Los Angeles hometown, the RMXKNZ sound encompasses everything from golden age West Coast hip-hop and Afro-Caribbean rhythms to electrofunk and cumbia—all filtered through the modern Latinx lens and powered by a politically woke, socially conscious message of positivity.
In 2019, RMXKNZ are self-releasing their self-titled debut album. Written, composed and produced solely by Salvador and Asdru and inspired by the 2016 US presidential election, ‘RMXKNZ’ serves as the duo’s musical manifesto to the world. The album addresses the issues affecting global society today—immigration, racism, social justice—while also celebrating life, stimulating engaging discussions and sparking positive global change.
