Sam Johnson grew up in the beach cities of Southern California, where Sublime’s self-titled album was part of the school curriculum. He formed his first reggae band in high school—Invisibly Mic’d—think high socks and flat-brimmed hats.
After a move to San Francisco, music took a back seat to making sandwiches, waiting tables, and clocking in at his uncle’s bookstore—where he clearly didn’t belong (he’s only read like three or four books). One day, his uncle told him to figure out what he really wanted to do. Sam was writing songs, but had no gigs. So his uncle made a suggestion: try street performing.
That idea turned into five years of busking at Fisherman’s Wharf, playing the same six songs on repeat and hustling CDs to passersby. Eventually, someone offered him a paid gig. Then another. And another.
Today, Sam keeps a full schedule playing shows across the country, releasing music from his home studio with the help of some talented friends. He’s got a wife, a baby, and a guitar—and that’s pretty much the whole story.
