Meet Sam Podmore – a young, thoughtful, and passionate artist born in Zimbabwe and now based in Wellington, New Zealand. Sam’s journey into music began somewhere unexpected, sitting down at a grand piano owned by an old family friend and discovering he could play parts of songs he knew. 4 hours later, he was hooked.
During the months of lockdown, this spark grew into something deeper, pushing him to start sing in his local church and producing on GarageBand. Being part of worship band regularly gave him a solid grounding in the flow of playing live music and capturing emotion within the structure of a song, not to mention improving his voice. The passion became an obsession as he moved into Year 13 and picked up music as a school subject for the first time, giving him a strong foundation in music production and confirmed what he already felt: music was more than a hobby, it was his creative lifeblood.
As he discovered more about songwriting, he started diving into his background and upbringing as an immigrant and found joy in expressing both the weight and the freedom of being different.
Now, as both a producer and artist, he’s crafting music that blends technicality and rhythmic precision with raw, emotional storytelling. His music invites listeners to see the world through a new lens—challenging cultural assumptions and encouraging introspection about identity, belonging and a critical analysis about where they come from.
