Shredding guitars and orchestral ambiance are Sam Russell’s specialities. The London-based solo artist takes a cross-disciplinary approach to composition, fostering propensities for the heavy metal and classical genres that intermingle to varying extents throughout his discography.
After years spent contributing his talents to different outfits, he embarked on his independent venture in 2016. His first release was an electric guitar-driven cover album of Bach’s first cello suite, which featured cellist Jacqueline Phillips on “Prelude Duet.” He would later follow up on the project with the second installment of Bach’s suites in 2018.
In the interim, he debuted his critically-acclaimed heavy metal record, ‘Impetuous Desire’ (2017). The eclectic showcase of melodic intricacy and modern neoclassicism features contributions by Dan Leigh (New Device), Doro Pesch (Warlock), and Jason Bowld (Bullet For My Valentine).
Further exploring the classical form with his own writing, he once again paired up with Phillips on his 2020 singles, “Autumn Sunset” and “If Only We Could Dance.” Since then, he’s debuted an album of his own compositions. ‘Ternary Ideas’ (2021) boasts a medley of different instrumental combinations alongside captivating orchestrals.
Through 2021, he anticipates the release of additional classical compositions with new dynamics, including the incorporation of his revered electric guitar melodies, as well as metal instrumentals.
