When they first met, Billy was fresh off a sweet tour pocketing £50 a week singing for old people down a pub in rural England; Naz was thinking about binning the bass in favour of starting a dog walking business; and Lael was band hopping, living off puff pastries in the back of a tour bus. Believe it or not, the posh, gamer ex-choir boy; forthright, dog loving South Londoner and beautiful, aesthetic-obsessed boy scout didn't hit it off at first so that was that for a time. As years passed they each found success, bouncing from country to country performing in front of crowds 10,000+ strong. So why are they so very (very) unknown? They were the guys behind the big names, the hired hands holding it down at the back.
Soon they started crossing paths on their travels. Eye-rolls turned to nods, nods to handshakes, handshakes to hugs and hugs to full-on, balls-out bro love.
San Mara was born.
Ellie Goulding, Hurts, Ann-Marie, Labyrinth and Little Mix were amongst those they worked for so time together was tight but man love prevailed and they formed their unique blend of alt-pop-rock-soul-stuff.
“We thought we’d just have a go” says Billy. That’s the spirit, mate.
They’ve played sticky pubs and sold out stadiums; headline world tours and in school gymnasiums. So what's next for this unlikely trio?
“I just wanna write some songs and do some gigs with these idiots. If it all kicks off? We’ll bring everyone along for the ride.”
