SARA MUÑIZ (Gijón, 1984) is a composer, pianist and violist based in Northern Spain (Asturias) and Madrid.
Her work revolves around the exploration of the sound of the piano and string instruments, creating soundscapes that range from Neoclassical to Ambient. She co-founded both the Framily record
label and the electronic group CICADA together with Jose Rilla, with whom she has developed a body of work linked to sound experimentation via the modification of the sound of the viola using
pedals and loops.
She has always felt the need to explore the viola beyond the limits of classical training in pursuit of a sound and language of her own. She has played in and recorded with several bands belonging to Spain’s independent scene such as Manta Ray, Pablo Und Destruktion and Dot Tape Dot, as well as giving numerous concerts both in and outside of Spain at festivals such as Sonar and participating in RNE’s Radio 3 concerts, recording and composing arrangements for over a score of albums.
She also maintains a strong interest in the use of recursive music, repetition and drone in her search for altered, introspective states of consciousness. Her references on the piano range from Satie to Kali Malone, while her
minimalist treatment of strings may bring to mind Arvo Pärt, Pauline Oliveros and contemporary composers such as Ane Müller and Shida Shahabi.
