What happens when two hit country songwriters fall in love?
Joni Delaurier and Troy Kokol have written with and for artists like Shane Yellowbird, Brett Kissel, Tenille Townes, The Higgins, Mike Plume and Australia's Hayley Jensen. Originally meeting at a songwriting event in Calgary, Alberta, the two started dating and took their first trips to Nashville, falling deeply in love with their craft, and one another.
The pair wrote Yellowbird’s hit song “Pickup Truck”, which was listed as the #6 all-time song on Canadian country radio by Billboard and spent twelve weeks in the top 10. This earned the pair nominations for Canadian Country Music Song and Songwriters of the Year, a SOCAN Award and opened doors to collaborations with some of the best writers and artists on both sides of the border. Their chemistry on stage and off have earned them a spot as industry darlings.
Both have released solo records, with Kokol earning himself solo nods for Male Artist of the Year at the Canadian Indigenous Music Awards. But forming a duo was a natural evolution from playing countless songwriter rounds where they would sing incredible harmonies on each other's songs, and the million times they were told “you should start a band”. During the pandemic as a gag with some radio friends, they wrote "Looking for a Lockdown with You", which went on to be recorded by Aaron Goodvin, Michelle Wright, Duane Steele & CBC Heartland's Amber Marshall and garnered a Top 50 on Canadian Billboard charts.
