The positioning and identity of Sea Island & Ferry has been a topic in discussion since its formation in 2016. While calling itself a neo-chamber ensemble, the group is also perceived to be producing works in the likes of film music. Whether telling stories about migration, sexual minorities, climate change, or the lives of artists, people and objects in their home base of Hong Kong play a major part in inspiring the group’s music.
Beginning with Crossings in 2018, the group has maintained a pace of releasing an album every two years. After Telescope, released in 2020 and enthusiastically received by local critics, the group presents their third recording project in 2022. To be released digitally in two tranches, the project As if brings to audience a dual collection of works with contrasting theses and moods.
As a performing team, Sea Island & Ferry has appeared at eccentric local venues, and has also charted their course in Macau, Taiwan and Okinawa, Japan. Recently, the group was invited to create music for an exhibition titled In-Between at the Hong Kong Museum of Art, mashing up with animations, installations and other types of artwork, and culminating in the EP “As if - I. In-Between”.
