In a world where robots are programmed to be more like humans, where humans are programmed by the algorithms of a digital world competing for control of emotions and behaviours...some guys got together in a cellar and said, "This is weird but let's make some music and sing about it a bit".
Sentient Robot transmitted digital singles ‘Visualanti’, 'Easy Promises' and 'Leave Now' in 2019 with ‘Afterglow’ following in 2020.
It began with partnership formed in 2018 between Steve Marsden (No Hope in New Jersey, Josephine) and Nat O'Brien (Marlo,The Logicals) after years playing live in bands with drummer Pete Marshall (Liam Frost & The Slowdown Family, Paul Heaton and Jacqui Abbot) and bass guitarist Sam Morris (Alfie, Bleepseals, Marrillion). Nat with a clutch of lyrics, ideas and melodies, and Steve with a guitar and a mind for creating and producing. And so with alternative indie pop sensibilities at its heart, the Sentient Robot - a fresh, retrospective, forward-looking, Mancunian, internationally concerned musical machine - was born.
The Robot is programmed to make you dance, sing or shout. Bowie, LCD Sound System, Talking Heads, John Grant, Grandaddy and Hotchip flow through the music as Marsden makes seamless transitions from clean 80’s pop guitar and synths into soaring guitar licks, all nailed down by the dynamic rhythm section of Marshall and Morris. O’Brien’s lyrics and vocals draw on the band’s influences with similarities to Bowie and Byrne in tone and rhythm.
