Of the almost countless private label Indian Surinamese releases from the Netherlands in the 1980s, 'Dance Time with Shakti' is one of those diamonds in the rough. The first and seemingly only release by Shakti, loosely translated from Sanskrit as “strength” or “power”, the 13-piece band lives up to their name. Backed by Arnold, Bart, Henry and Roy on horns, Anand on strings, Dople on bass, Evert on drums, Harold on percussion and Harto and Romeo on keys, singers Frank, Remon and Raymond Sahipsad belt out three fierce covers and one original composition. Pi Pi is a cover of the Babla penned Pee Pee Pee Pyare Dil Laga Ke Pee, taken from his original soundtrack for the 1985 movie Meetha Zehar (one of Babla’s rare ‘official’ roles as a Bollywood composer). An ode to drinking and partying, Shakti somehow betters the original classic.
