Shelter & Sound is the post-hardcore and alternative project of songwriter Michael Coates (Shelter) and Shawn Bell (Sound). All music written and performed by the pair.
In the mid-2000s, Coates toured with Dayton acclaimed Auburndale (East West), co-founding Substream Magazine, and launching Thriving Records (ADA, Warner Music Group) But following the sudden death of his label co-founder Marc Young in a plane crash in 2009, Coates walked away from the industry entirely; gear packed into closets and the music went dormant for well over a decade.
The revival was entirely accidental: hanging a few old guitars as home decor in an office led to casual strumming, which quickly triggered an undeniable outpouring of songs. Partnering with a long-time collaborator Shawn Bell and pairing with producer Aaron Carlson (We Came As Romans, Dayseeker), Coates and Bell re-entered the studio to craft a sound defined by maturity, nostalgia, and modern heavy rock production.
After hearing early demos, Sweet Cheetah Records immediately offered their support in helping to release the project. Fusing 2000s post-hardcore catharsis with refined wall-of-sound production, Shelter & Sound explores internal conflict, emotional friction, and the journey back to creation.
Frailty streaming now, Life on Display dropping Oct 9th, with To the Middle dropping November 6th.
