Shinkai De is a plunderphonics project from Pennsylvania. The project was formed as a duo between members Luca and Chris (who were originally credited as Syd and Vel, respectively). The name was chosen by Chris, and it means "in the deep sea" in Japanese (written as 深海で). Currently, there are 3 albums, 3 EPs, and 9 singles released by Shinkai De. Chris left the project in February 2022, and Luca has been the sole member since then.
The project does not have one common genre (other than "plunderphonics", but that is more of a descriptor of the creation process than the sound of the music). Nearly every song utilizes some sort of sample and their sources vary wildly. Physical instruments and original arrangements are often combined with these samples. The first EP, Time Is Your Only Enemy, followed a more traditional vaporwave style. The first album (LP), Every Day the Same Dream, was more shoegaze/alternative rock oriented. The second album, Ride Nowhere, could be described as ambient and slushwave. The third album, The Late Mr. Si, has more to do with sigilkore and experimental hip hop in general.
