Showbiz is a Jakarta-based pop band formed by longtime friends Joseph Saryuf (instruments, backing vocals) and Merdi Leonardo (lead vocals). Their collaboration began in 2003, leading to two recorded songs—“Precious Time” (Merdi on vocals) and “What a Fool I’ve Been” (Joseph on vocals). These tracks were featured on Pop Shower, a 2004 indie pop compilation by Japan’s Quince Records.
Following this, Joseph pursued music production with Sinjitos Collective while performing with Santamonica and Direct Action. Merdi, meanwhile, gained recognition as a DJ and co-founded Diskoria, a group that revitalized Indonesia’s club scene.
Showbiz blends ethereal soundscapes with catchy melodies, drawing from Blueboy’s melancholy, The Radio Dept.’s romanticism, and The Aluminum Group’s sophistication, alongside influences from New Order, LCD Soundsystem, and My Bloody Valentine.
In 2024, after two decades, Joseph and Merdi reunited at Joyland Festival Jakarta, reigniting their creative spark. They are now working on a full-length album set for release in 2025.
