Founded in 2015 by Topher & Ryan - Sideways Paving Co. is not your ordinary Blues Rock Jazz Funk Rap Hip-Hop & RnB band. No no no, not at all - at least that’s what more and more people are beginning to realize.
Unique in style and sound, SPCo. explores every musical genre (save Country), embodying the mantra that Good Music is Good Music, no matter the label thrust upon it. And yet, for a band so eclectic, Sideways still manages to maintain a common musical theme throughout all their projects. Too often have I heard listeners spontaneously shout, “I knew this was a Sideways song!” fifteen seconds into a newly recorded jam.
Luckily, we were able to catch up with the band after their most recent show:
“Rapping was actually my first musical passion. Growing up, I would always print out rap lyrics and perform to myself in my room,” explained Topher when asked about the band’s most recent trend of performing rap songs live. “Actually, believe it or not, Ryan gave me my first rap album/cd - he burned me a copy of, ‘Get Rich or Die Tryin,’’ by 50 Cent - it was our 5th grade summer at Buckley Country Day Camp, an I was on my way."
“I think that’s what gives us such a different sound,” Ryan interjected,, “a lot of bands are sort of stuck in whatever bubble or genre they put themselves in - or that they want to exist in. It’s limiting, and we've never done that."
So what's next for Topher, Ryan & the SPCo. gang? Stay tuned for their upcoming album, "High Hopes," coming soon!
