Composer and bassist Sigurd Hole's work examines the dialogue between composition and improvisation in an exploratory musical landscape often inspired by the sounds of nature. The result is a unique musical world that more and more people are turning their ears towards, both at home and abroad. Sigurd has received critical acclaim for his solo double bass albums in media such as The New York Times, BBC and Downbeat, and he has performed solo concerts world-wide on stages like Carnegie Hall in New York, De Roma in Antwerp and Konserthuset Stockholm. The relationship between humanity and nature shines through much of his work, like the solo albums "Elvesang" (2018) and "Lys/Mørke" (2020). The latter was recorded outdoors on the island of Fleinvær outside Bodø, and features a very special interaction with the natural sounds on the island.
In the ensemble work "Roraima", field recordings of endangered animal species from the Amazon rainforest are used as an important building block in the music. "Roraima" won the prestigious German Record Critics' Award in 2022.
His 2024 release "Extinction sounds", written for the festival Tron Talks in 2023, is inspired by Hole ́s own memories of natural soundscapes from his childhood.
Other ongoing projects include a new version of "Roraima" for chamber orchestra in collaboration with the Trondheim Soloists, and a new work for double bass and string quartet in collaboration with CIKADA. Both projects will be premiered in 2025.
