After living in and exploring art scenes in major US cities Los Angeles and Detroit, singer songwriter Simone Maya migrated to New Orleans and found a home unlike any other, filled with creative inspiration and musical aspiration. There, Silk and Mortar blossomed from collaboration with keyboardist Luke Palmer, later joined by core members, David Gilman on bass and drummer Jamey Thompson. Using elements of soul, blues, rock, jazz and world music, Silk and Mortar quickly emerged in the New Orleans music scene as a fresh look at original music, coined "neon soul" - as an immersive balance between softness and grit. Playing at diy events, carnival season balls and local festivals, Silk and Mortar brings high energy, movement and passion to their audience. Their music is inspired by a variety of contemporary and classic artists such as Nina Simone, Jill Scott, Fleetwood Mack, Fela Kuti, Chet Baker, Radiohead, Hiatus Kaiyote, Erykah Badu, Robert Glasper, and more. Silk and Mortar is currently working on a full length album release and will be releasing singles and continuing to share the music they love to create. Check out their instagram for updates and silly videos where they share an authentic silliness amongst an existentialist's world of chaos.
