Sleepfighter wasn’t so much formed as grew like a furious, rock-and-roll fever when four friends, Ian Bobby (guitar, vocals), Matt Wilson (drums), Sebastian Lye (guitar) and Wes Thomas (bass), began finding time to unwind in between throwing hatchets as competitive axe throwers in downtown Toronto.
Musical veterans hailing from acts like The True Romantics, Heartwork, and Wes the Electrician, a weekly songwriting session quickly turned into a tight catalogue of tracks and a handful of gigs opening for bands such as The Bronx, Biblical, and Rules.
In 2020, with the injustices that inspired many of their early songs continuing unabated and the pandemic grinding the world to a halt, the four band mates were committed to taking those feelings of helplessness and ‘a quiet rage that just might eat you alive’ and translating them into their first full-length album.
Partnering with producer/engineer Wayne Cochrane (Cancer Bats, Protest the Hero, City and Colour, and Moneen) they compiled early recordings, built a makeshift studio in Wilson’s basement, and found time in between trying to work and survive over the past year to finalize their vision.
With a signature, bluesy growl and punk swagger weaving effortlessly between metal grooves and melodic breakdowns, Sleepfighter brings a genre-defying sound to their debut album and explode onto the scene for all fans looking to bang their heads along to something original, heavy and loud.
