‘Marshmallow’, the debut EP from Stockport duo Slomo Casino, was born from an exchange of drunken voice memos between two friends. One year, and thousands of voice memos later, Jonny Ball (guitar/vocals) and Jack Batchelor (drums) are ready to release their debut EP.
The pair met in Liverpool, forming a friendship after a particularly chaotic camping trip they shared together with friends.
Fast forward seven years and, between them, the pair have spent years supporting big name acts with their separate bands. Despite success with these projects, Jonny and Jack yearned for something else. Keen to make music closer to their hearts, they started afresh. What began as an exchange of increasingly drunken voice memos slowly morphed into something tangible. Something unique, bright and, most importantly to them… something exciting.
Slomo Casino’s EP is characterised by infatuate falsettos, breezy verses and catchy, wing-spreading choruses. But whilst their effervescent brand of Indie/Pop-Soul quickly charms and hooks, there’s also a resilience to their music. “Don’t give it up, let it go to waste”, Jonny sings in the chorus of beaming title track ‘Marshmallow’. A song about love and lust at its core, it calls upon a desire to chase after something more. For Slomo Casino, it’s about having the courage to pursue the music, as well as the love, that inspires them.
