Chris Slaten teaches high school literature and writing most of the time. He also releases music under the name Son of Laughter. His recordings The Mantis and The Moon, No Story is Over, and “The Great One” were made possible by listeners who hosted and attended his house and church shows across the country. In the summer of 2024 he recorded a four song EP of studio sessions with the Old Bear Records house band and The Local Hang-ups.
He has been a repeat speaker and performer at the Rabbit Room’s Hutchmoot conference since 2012. He is currently working on a musical adaptation of the life of Jacob and another album to be completed in 2025. He lives in southeast Tennessee with his wife and children.

“His guitar parts are wonderfully inventive, his Paul Simon-esque voice soars, and his lyrics are as whimsical as they are literate. Any release of a new Son of Laughter record is cause for celebration.” Andrew Peterson, singer-songwriter, author of The Wingfeather Saga
“I will have ‘The Meal We Could Not Make’ on repeat forever and am basically a Son of Laughter fan for life.” Emily P. Freeman, WSJ bestselling author of The Next Right Thing.
“When we first heard Son of Laughter's music, an album repeat festival promptly began in our car, lasting for weeks. If you haven't heard this music, you need to.” Dave Radford of The Gray Havens
