Groundbreaking, magical, and enigmatic, Souled American formed in Chicago 1986 with Joe Adducci (vocals, bass), Chris Grigoroff (vocals, guitar), Scott Tuma (electric guitar), and Jamey Barnard (drums). The foursome drew upon a wealth of influences, from New Orleans to Nashville to Jamaica to London, settling on an idiosyncratic kind of alternative country sound that was later dubbed "No Depression." The band recorded six ignored classics between 1988 and 1996. Each record was richer than the last, slower, more laden with mystery, and each sold fewer copies than the last. None of their music came to the Internet until 2024. The remaining members of the band (Chris Grigoroff and Joe Adducci) have been working on a seventh record since 1997.
