Sound Service is the stage name for London-based, Greek musician and producer, Ioannis Masouras. Inspired by the 80s synth scene and early 90s guitar driven indie pop, Ioannis picked up a bass guitar, and founded Matisse in the grey landscape or what was Athens in the early 00s. Matisse went on to release a total of four albums, including the splendid Toys up (2007) and PaperDoor (2012), featuring a number of songs that Yannis penned.
In 2013, he moved to London, England, and Matisse were put on a “permanent hiatus". Ioannis went quiet on the music front for almost a decade. “When I moved to London my sole focus was changing careers and coming out the other side in one piece,” he explains. “A lot of people don’t realise that most musicians don’t make a decent income out of music and it’s so easy for songwriting to fall out of your list of priorities when things get tough,” says Ioannis. “But It’s hard to pretend for the rest of your life that you don’t care” he admits.
“So I'm back on my own this time, diving deeper into electronic music waters because let’s face it: I can’t sing and I am not an amazing guitarist. But I can play the bass and the keyboard well enough...”
Sound Service’s songs have a strong foundation on electronic dance music, but wink at genres that have their roots in the 80s such as Synthwave and Retrowave.
