As Spacecadet Lullabies, Melbourne based producer Matt Lewin returns with a new release, The Map Maker (Available March 18, 2021). This 5 track LP is a departure from his previous releases; Gardens (2018), Ghost Songs (2010), Spacecadet Lullabies (2004), as it is a thematic collaboration with a spirit captured on a hidden reel to reel tape.
Lewin’s sound has often explored a range of electronica idioms from dreamlike, down tempo trip hop, glitchy game music, to warped electronic pop. Previously, Lewin’s compositions were created by a wide range of vintage and modern equipment, custom made guitar pedals and hand made instruments. However, on his recent release, he puts all this aside and works solely from samples he’s created from a collection of unheard recordings made by his enigmatic grandfather on a reel to reel tape. Lewin’s most personal work to date, The Map Maker finds him delving into a deeply moving minimalist ambient, haunting and cinematic landscape.
