Formed from the ashes of The Arachnids, Ugh Gaseous, Those Stairwell Fluids, Monk Noise and Uninteresting Scum - quite a lot of ashes - Speed of Life released two albums: 1982's Krautrock-inspired Buzzsaw and 1984's Danceteria, featuring a more New Romantic sound that was foisted upon them by their US manager, Bernice Broderick-Imlach, who knew nothing about music. Their only surviving recording is the 1979 single, Regan & Carter, released on the Rebel Vinyl label, concerning their love of the British 1970s cop show, The Sweeney. Speed of Life disbanded in 1985 after lead singer, Garth Tyson, vanished having fled the stage at the Glastonbury Festival. His story is told in the book, DeadStar, by Nick Griffiths.
