Thapelo Modiela (also known as “SPeeKa”) is a music producer, voice-over artist and international award-winning filmmaker born and raised in Soweto. He began producing in 2005, in the 11th Grade after his father bought him his first Desktop Computer.
He released his first mixtape in 2010 titled "The Insane Maestro" which featured artists such as The Soil, Samthing Soweto, Red Button, MaseVen and more.
His production work was featured on the popular YFM Hip-Hop radio show “The Full Clip” (2010 - 2014) (hosted by Sizwe Dhlomo & Siyabonga "Scoop" Ngwekazi) where guest rappers (such as Maraza, Shugasmakx, Reason, Kwesta, Siya Shezi, and a lot more) freestyled over his beats.
He runs a web series titled "Sotra Cyphers" that showcases the best in South African lyricism. Guests on the show have included Stogie T, Hymphatic Thabs, Sizwe Alakine, Snazz D, Touchline, N'veigh, Molly Superman Omnyama and more.
In 2020 he won the Best Documentary Film and Best Global Narrative awards at the New York Hip-Hop Film Festival for his documentary film "Slaghuis Joint Elements" (2019) which detailed the rise and fall of the legendary South African Hip-Hop movement "Slaghuis".
