A detached and peaceful gloominess with a wholesome euphoric groove. The sensation of newly visiting a vibrant place alone. Such are the opposites found in the music of new Berlin-based band, Spider Hug, formed by singer Julia Romas, guitarist Yorgos Mavrogenis, bassist August Bangert and drummer Sebastian Canales. Four people with different cultural backgrounds attempting new beginnings in the big metropolis, meet and create a strange concoction of musical styles. The genre is probably best described as neo-psychedelic indie with not-so-subtle influences from experimental- and world-music. Behind the dreamy songs, a faint picture can be discerned: Spider Hug’s clear-minded embrace of melancholy. Its celebration. Grabbing it by the hand to dance, out of the dark and into the light, instead of treating it as a personality flaw to be avoided or eliminated. Their first single “Jupiter” is out on January 14. 2022.
