He co-founded the Serbian School of Music and, conducting The Belgrade Military Orchestra and The Stankovic Choir, he introduced Beethoven's Ninth Symphony and Haydn's =Creation= to Belgrade. The majority of his compositions are theatrical, including many incidental pieces and an opera. The opera, =Dawn= (1903), is the first Serbian national opera and has as its subject matter the Serbian conflict with the Turks and contains Serbian folk music, oriental melismas and augmented-interval scales.
