Wu Tang Clan’s influence has permeated territories well far away from Staten Island. Azamat Shishov, artist and beatmaker from Kazakhstan, was inspired by Wu Tang Clan's music, as well as by the environment and events of his life in the 90s, to start his project “State of Ruins”.
After the collapse of the USSR in the 90s, Kazakhstan fell to economic crisis, organized crime, widespread corruption and social destruction. In these times, music recordings from around the world hardly came into this territory, but some of those that filtered through were by the Wu Tang Clan, on cassette tape.
State of Ruins' sound is pure boom-bap instrumental hip-hop with hard drums, dark melodies and vintage decadent aesthetics.
