From early on, Bergen-based rock group Steamship Normandie labeled their music «West coast rock». This was not only due to the fact that Bergen is situated on the West coast of Norway; it was also a humoristic nod towards musical inspirations such as Crosby, Stills & Nash and The Doors. With vocal harmonies, electric pianos and melodic guitar riffs, the band always sounded like they belonged in the 1970s rather than in the 2000s.
Starting off as a three-piece band with remaining members of indie rock band
<a href="spotify:artist:5mnAiU1f3vzReFG08HdVGG" data-name="Snootles">Snootles</a> - Ewoud van Veen (vocals, guitar, songwriting), Helge Haugland (drums, vocals) and Karl Erik Bernt (bass, vocals) - they were soon joined by guitarist Tor Erik Solem (<a href="spotify:artist:1B0sThc5PPyxh9dZLKouFe" data-name="HavariKommisjonen">HavariKommisjonen</a>). With keyboardist Thorvald Johannessen (<a href="spotify:artist:3hEz4qppfLw8WBzMZ37hsf" data-name="Royal Rooster">Royal Rooster</a>) joining in 2012, the band found its present form. The band’s name also went through changes, from Normandie to S/S Normandie and finally Steamship Normandie.
Playing many of Bergen’s rock scenes and a couple of festivals over the years, the band decided to make their first recordings in 2017, together with producer Daniel Birkeland at Havnelageret Studio. The four songs were released by the end of the year. Local newspaper Bergens Tidende gave the single Past, Present, Future great reviews, with five out of six stars, comparing the music with Kåre and the Cavemen. A music video for Nightmares, based on a manuscript by songwriter van Veen and animated by Argentinan Esteban S. Farias, was released on Youtube in january 2018.
