After graduating as an engineer specialised in photonics, and studying piano, composition and music technology at the Royal Flemish Conservatory, the Royal Brussels Conservatory and Royal Conservatory of The Hague, Stefan Prins obtained a PhD in composition at Harvard University under the guidance of Chaya Czernowin and Hans Tutschku.
His music often includes and reflects on contemporary technologies and new media, thematising its relationship with the physical, performing body and the environments it inhabits.
He received awards such as the “Kunstpreis Berlin für Musik”, “Kranichsteiner Musikpreis für Komposition”, “ISCM Young Composers Award” or the “International Impuls Composition Award”. His music is performed worldwide by some of the most exciting performers, ensembles and orchestras around. Many of his works have been recorded and released, notably on Sub Rosa, Kairos, Wergo and Neos.
Together with Pieter Matthynssens, he is artistic director of the Nadar Ensemble.
He performs regularly in the improvised music scene (live electronics), for example with Yaron Deutsch in the Ministry of Bad Decisions.
Stefan teaches masterclasses and workshops at festivals and universities world wide and is appointed professor of composition and director of the Hybrid Music Lab at the Hochschule für Musik “Carl Maria von Weber” Dresden since 2020.
He is currently based in Berlin.
