Stein was born in Oslo in 1969 and started to play the piano when he was five years old. He grew up as the son of a photographer and has always been fascinated by the relationship between sounds and music and the visual. He lives and works on the southernmost inhabited island in Norway. The stunning nature, proximity to the sea, the light, the sounds, even the unique smells impact him and his music. For 30 years, he has produced, composed and performed, in studios and live all over the world, with a vast number of gifted artists. He has worked with the most fantastic singers and joikers, traditional Sami singers. He has developed an interest in all kinds of new acoustic and electronic instruments. This has shaped him into the multi-musician he is today, experimenting with various materials, from large synth systems to small, rare, battery-powered electronic audio devices. Stein is fascinated by the human voice as an instrument. From the early '90s onwards he has used his voice as an instrument without words, in its natural form and in more manipulated ways using different types of vocoders.
WE MEET WE TOUCH I AM This album is the first part of the project "We Meet, We Touch, I Am", and is the result of Stein‘s encounters with hundreds of choir singers, "the singing people”. This creates a beautiful atmosphere for Stein's improvisations.
