Stephen Horenstein is an American-born composer and performer. His repertoire of musical works (for solo, chamber ensemble, orchestra, electro-acoustic media and sound environment) has been performed and recorded in major festivals worldwide. He is known for his techniques of gestural conducting, as well as composition methods based on his theories of time perception. His works reveal a personal poetics of music, utilizing different approaches to pantonality and musical metaphor. Horenstein's seminal work as a performer was with composer/trumpeter Bill Dixon with whom he toured and recorded for over two decades. Horenstein has collaborated with many well-known artists, including Isamu Noguchi, Steve Paxton, Israel Hadany, Kibbutz Dance Company, Vertigo, Rony Someck, David Moss, Joelle Leandre, Mark Dresser, Bobby Zankel , William Parker & others. Horenstein has recorded on Black Saint/Soul Note (Italy) and JICM Recordings( USA). In 2014 he co-founded the CineConcert Project “to breath new life into silent films”. Festivals have included Festival D’Autumne, NY International Arts Festival, Israel Festival, Festival I’le de France, International Computer Music Festival, Festival Chaillol and others. In 1988 Horenstein founded the Lab Orchestra, which he still conducts. He also founded the Jerusalem Institute of Contemporary Music to bring music of our time to the greater public.
