Steve Berman is a singer/songwriter living in Portland, Oregon. Steve played in several bands in his younger days, but then pursued a long career as a therapist and college professor while becoming a father and grandfather. His first album, Mortality Play was released in 2025 and contained songs accumulated over 40 years along with a few new ones. His latest album, Social Work, is comprised almost entirely of songs written in the past 15 months. At age 79, Steve's voice and guitar chops are not what they once were so he has recruited musicians far more talented than himself to form the Ketones, a band of collaborators, including Cory Gehrich (guitar, bass, drums), Matthew Diloreto (keyboards), Alivia Nelson (vocals), Calla Mapel (vocals), Joel Ford (saxophone), and Heidi Aispuro (brass). Calla sings lead on "Hearts and Flowers" and Alivia sings lead on "Portland Rain", "Stars Fall", and "Perfect Email". Additional musicians are Michelle Alany (violin on "Portland Rain", Zach Gerzon (cello on "Grandchild Song") as well as backup singers, Rebecca Sanders, Leah Gilbert, and Melissa Masini. Steve still isn't sure if this is a vanity project or a creative Renaissance or some combination of the two. Please listen and decide.
