As a teen during the 70’s I’m sure I drove my family crazy “experimenting” at the piano. I listened to WRVR out of New York and was awed by artists like Jeff Lorber, Lyle Mays and Chick Corea, but also by the famous classical composers that my dad would play on the stereo and by what I was introduced to during piano lessons.
During the 80’s I gave home recording a try as it was becoming more accessible and wrote and recorded some stuff. It was a privilege to help out on church worship bands and even introduce some of my songs.
During the 90’s I began teaching piano more seriously, as well as playing out solo and with groups, and doing some small-time commercial projects.
The 2000’s up until present have mainly been family years, with not much music writing or recording going on, except for stuff I wrote as additional material for piano students at the music school where I work.
I’m amazed by and grateful for the emotive power of music. It’s so cool to live in a time when we can digitally capture and share it with each other around the world, even if we’re not on a major label.
Thanks for reading this, and perhaps checking out some of my music!
Grateful,
Steve Earl
