Steve Murf, born Stephen M. Murphy, originates from Atlanta, GA. He was introduced to music at a very early age, attending rehearsals of his parents’ singing groups on Friday nights. He would often lock himself in the bedroom that he shared with his older brother and sister and listened to cassette tapes of their first album until it warped.
One of his favorite pastimes was to sit and watch Rap City with his brother and sister every day after school. One of the most impactful moments for Murf was being introduced to A Tribe Called Quest and their album Midnight Marauders, and the 1996 OutKast single, Elevators. His brother had a vast collection of vinyl records and cassette tapes that would be played around the house. This introduction led to the additional hip-hop influences of KRS-One, Scott-la-Rock, Rakim, The Fresh Prince and DJ Jazzy Jeff, UTFO, Nas, and countless others.
Murf has landed placements on Ball in the Family, Deputy, Power Book II: Ghost, and others. His flow and lyrical influences include Big Boi, Andre 3000, Q-Tip, Nas, and Method Man. He is self-produced, drawing from a wide spectrum of influences, Quincy Jones, Mervyn E. Warren, Q-Tip, and Marvin Gaye, he fuses elements of funk, soul, and jazz in his production, creating strong bass lines, as well as rhythmic intricacies. Murf is a unique talent can capture a wide gamut of styles and genres and making them feel organic and timeless.
