Based in Los Angeles, Steve is a versatile musician known for his work as an alto saxophonist, pianist, and recording artist. With a foundation in jazz and an aptitude for blending global influences, his performances span across genres like funk, rock, pop, R&B, Latin, and experimental music. He is also a Global Jazz Studies graduate of The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music, and he performs with his seven-piece band in addition to multiple groups including the esteemed Los Angeles Jazz Orchestra.
Additionally, Steve Murillo serves as program manager for the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz. In this capacity, he manages activities for the institute’s master’s program at UCLA. He also manages the institute’s Jazz in the Classroom K-12 outreach program in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), where he oversees the curriculum and jazz combos for multiple schools.
Murillo’s commitment to music education extends further as he teaches for the LAUSD/Hancock Institute All-District Jazz Academy, where he currently directs the All-District’s B band, teaching high school students how to perform in a big band and how to study music as a jazz musician. He is also a clinician for the Walter Reed Jazz Festival and was recently on the faculty for the UCLA Summer Global Jazz Intensive.
