Joseph Johnson is the creative mind behind Stoney Point, a project formed in 2017 and shaped by years of sonic evolution. While the sound has shifted, Johnson’s songwriting remains the foundation. Drawing influence from bands like Slowdive and Duster, Stoney Point blends stripped-down rhythm guitar with psychedelic, plucky lead lines often compared to the madcap Syd Barrett. Johnson’s live playing is especially distinctive for its use of modal interchange, adding rich harmonic variety and unpredictability to each performance. Though often grouped with the Shoegaze Now crowd, the band’s music defies easy categorization—rooted in lo-fi textures, melodic nuance, and an ever-changing set of influences. The current live lineup, as of 2025, features Isaac Fladung, Guy Grengs, and Tyler Ramirez. This live cast differs slightly to the studio team behind the band’s fourth release and first full studio album. Recorded in May at the legendary Pachyderm Studio in Cannon Falls—home to classics like Nirvana’s In Utero and Hum’s You'd Prefer An Astronaut. Set for release in 2026, the album represents a major step forward in production and vision. Special thanks goes to Antonio Davis for his drumming on the record and Nick Tveitbakk for Engineering. The name “Stoney Point” is drawn from a winter surf spot in Duluth, known for its icy waves and dedicated local scene.
