Korean-born vocalist/improviser/composer Sunny Kim draws inspiration from her global nomad experiences, forging meaningful connections through self-discovery, deep listening, and collaboration. Winner of Apra Amcos Art Music Award, Performance of the Year (2023) and Best Vocalist by Jazz People's Magazine Reader's Poll (2012-13), she has released five albums as a leader and has collaborated with numerous musicians, dancers, and visual artists to deliver transformative experiences for audiences worldwide. Kim's recent works explore trauma, transcultural identity, and hybridity through improvisation and immersive soundscapes. As an artist in residency at the Grainger Museum, her multidisciplinary work Agony in Lines (2023) delves into the dichotomy of trauma as isolation and growth. Premiering at the Sydney Opera House, MotherTongue MotherLand (2023) celebrates multicultural collaboration and family stories of motherhood and migration. Based in Melbourne, Australia, she collaborates with contemporary musicians of diverse musical and cultural backgrounds including First Nations Artists such as Daniel Wilfred, David Wilfred, Amos Roach, Te Kahureremoa, Gambirra Illume, and WHAIA.
