Three time San Diego Music Award nominated Sutton James is a singer-songwriter known for his contributions to the Indie-Folk and Roots Rock music scenes. He has called both Arizona and California home throughout his life. In December 2015, Sutton relocated from San Diego to Flagstaff, Arizona, where he began recording solo, blending various genres while maintaining a rock 'n' roll spirit in his songwriting and performances.
His debut album, High Country Hiatus, was released in 2018. Following its release, Sutton embarked on an 18-month coast-to-coast, North American tour to promote the album. Shortly after his extensive touring, he returned to San Diego, where he continued to develop his style and songwriting. His SDMA nominations including "Best Folk or Acoustic Song" (2021), "Best Country or Americana Artist" (2024) and "Best Country or Americana Song" (2025).
Sutton's musical influences are diverse, drawing inspiration from artists such as Paul Simon, The Band, The Kinks, Willie Nelson, Lord Huron, The Beatles and Pink Floyd. In addition to his solo work, Sutton has been involved with several musical projects, including 3-time SDMA nominated Neighbors to the North, The Wagon, Help I'm Alive, and Ween tribute band Stallion. Over the years, Sutton has opened for such acts as Mike Watt, Air Supply, Chicano Batman and The Supersuckers.
Sutton James will be releasing his sophomore LP, Tombstones & Travel Plans, in the summer of 2025.
