Sylph is the solo project of former S.C.U.M founder and vocalist, Thomas Cohen, who began, several years ago, to bring a new musical project to life. Intended to be both psychedelic and collaborative in nature, it would be informed by notions of space and congregation, and built loosely around the concept of ‘mass’. This project eventually grew into Sylph; an elemental mix of electronic grit and club zing.
Sylph’s alien soundscapes have more in common with the after-dark scuzziness of S.C.U.M, so it felt natural to return to Mute, who released the band’s debut album in 2011. “On this new project I wanted to fuse the singer-songwriter format of having a verse or a chorus, with a harder electronic repetition,” explains Cohen.
Together with techno collaborators Regis, Terence Fixmer, Nicolas Bougaïeff and Rrose, Cohen poured his ideas and inspirations, from architecture to textiles, into a series of club-tinged EPs, set for release through 2021.
