The mysterious Telemen issued one single in Australia on Parlophone in September 1966, "Theme from 'My Name's McGooley'"/"Stop Gently." It's a rather poor record, actually, the A-side being a country-ish instrumental that sounds like a corny cowboy-prairie homage. The B-side, also instrumental, is very much in the twangy surf-country hybrid style popularized by the Shadows in the early '60s, with a touch of the kitschily eccentric instrumentals produced by Joe Meek during that time as well. According to the track listings of the Allusions compilation Anthology 1966-1968, the Telemen were actually the Allusions, a decent British Invasion-like mid-'60s Australian group that had some success in its native Sydney. The otherwise comprehensive liner notes don't mention anything else about the Telemen single, however, although the songwriting credit for "Stop Gently" is given to "Morris," presumably the same guy as the Allusions' Michael Morris. ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi
