Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley met in the Philosophy dept. at the University of Colorado in 2009. After college, Patrick proposed that they move onto a small sailboat and explore the Eastern Seaboard, a trip he had saved for since childhood. Six months and 2000 miles later they returned to Denver where they got involved in the DIY music scene and began writing songs to document the voyage.
As Tennis, the duo released the blog-viral “Marathon” and “South Carolina.” The band went on to top Billboard’s Heatseeker chart and made their television debut on The Tonight Show and The Late Show, transitioning them from the DIY scene to main stages. After working with indie and major labels, Tennis chose an alternate path and formed their own label, Mutually Detrimental. They continued to self-produce and write much of their material living in seclusion on their sailboat. Yours Conditionally (2017) written primarily in the Sea of Cortez, became their most commercially successful album, resulting in support tours with The National, The Shins and Father John Misty.
Swimmer (2020) marked a sonic evolution. Moore and Riley expanded their palette with unique time signatures and arrangements, stepping fully into their roles as songwriters and producers. Their seventh album and most exemplary work, Face Down in The Garden (2025) ushered them onto stages such as Red Rocks and The Greek Theater. The band has announced an indefinite hiatus while Moore turns her attention to writing a book.
