Despite the animalistic ferocity of their sound, the message and vision The Apes in June have to share are some of the most human. Jaden Richardson, with support from fellow members Micah Cartagena (bass) and Matt Macy (drums) uses devices outside the conventions of thrash, grunge, and punk-pop to convey a range of stories.
The Apes kindled and garnered a heatwave of attention during the latter half of 2022. Performing a heap of live shows across their home state of Texas, hosting a series of ambitious house concerts, and receiving support from associated acts culminated with the release of "Rub Salt in the Wounds." The new years' punk anthem marked their debut single.
In light of its own reception, Apes' would later rerecord and recycle Rub Salt. James DuMaine welcomed Richardson and the group into Unfair Records' studios in spring of 2024. His production and other associated artists including Seer, helped the Apes find the artistry to finalize and release their first record.
"The Bend," releasing on July 26, serves to paint a colorful, five-song picture of the experiences the band has to share. Richardson's soulful melodies, Cartagena's angsty licks, and Macy's heart-racing beats weave into a youthful piece about communication, understanding, and identity.
