Surf-pop/rock is somewhat a niche that tends to have a nostalgic approach to the genre.
But not The Billy Surfs. They have a modern take on Surf on their new EP ‘Shut Up’.
The apt title refers to the fact that the instruments do most of the talking and the vocal elements are shorter punch lines or back ground vocals.
The music leaves you with a multitude of impressions and references from Dick Dale to Blondie, Pulp Fiction, Bond movies, Khruangbin and their Danish pears PowerSolo, but in a remarkable way they go beyond their references and manage to create their own universe.
The single track ”Did We Match on Tinder” no doubt provokes a lot of different images for the listener and the music is full of great breaks and beats and naturally enough guitar for a lifetime.
A coexisting power between surf and sex is more than implied as you go through the tracks.
Follow up songs such as ”Slow Blow” and ”Big Billy” sounds like the soundtrack to something x-rated. But it’s never vulgar or ferocious, but sort of leans towards you in a sensuous, succulent and sweaty manner.
Their next EP 'Speak Up' will feature vocals.
The Billy Surfs consists of Noah Rosanes (Guitar and vocals), Sara Broberg Jonsson (Vocal), Kristian Hybel (bass) and Johannes Gissel (drums).
