The Breakaways were one of the first New Zealand bands to play music drawing from the more R&B-oriented wing of the British Invasion, issuing a couple LPs and half a dozen singles in the mid-'60s. Initially known as Bari & the Breakaways in honor of lead guitarist Bari Gordon, they changed their name to just the Breakaways after Gordon left the band around the end of 1965. Most of their recorded repertoire consisted of fairly faithful cover versions of songs by British Invasion bands and 1950s rock oldies, and they didn't make an impact beyond New Zealand before splitting in 1967. ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi
