The Bright and Shiny were a Swedish rock band formed in Stockholm in 2002. Consisting of founding members (and married couple) bassist Lisa Ängquist and vocalist/producer Håkan Ängquist, guitarist Thomas Isberg and programmer/keyboardist Christoffer Lindström.
Emerging from indie bands with more traditional settings Håkan and Lisa started to incorporate an Amiga 500 as a rythm and bass computer when their drummer quit in a previous band. With the Amiga as a foundation they started to experiment with analougue electronic equipment, often limited and cheap, toy keyboards, guitar effects and an 8-track porta studio.
The name The Bright and Shiny was taken from a quote by Andy Warhol: ”The artificial fascinates me, the bright and shiny.”
The concept of true and fake, natural and artificial was a recurrent theme in songs and the bands prerecorded live performances. Since all members attended university in different cities few live shows included all members. The missing members where included on back tracks exclusively recorded for each show, solving the scheduling problem. For one show i Stockholm, at the record store DGR, the complete album was performed as a karaoke show since only the vocalist was present.
The band released one EP ”Turn it on” on March 3rd 2003, one single ”Hasta la Victoria Siempre” on April 4th 2004 and the debut full length album ”I’ve got love” on May 5th 2005 before breaking up in the fall of 2005.
