A musician and an artist meet late one night in a bowling alley in the middle of nowhere. Four years later, they end up in the same songwriting class, and the rest is history. Or not. They move to Edmonton, AB, domesticate and have 4 kids. Andrew, a social worker, moonlights as a singer-songwriter, slinging EP's in bars at night while Naomi stays at home with the kids and sells her art in local markets on the weekend. Ob la di ob la ld, life goes on. Until Naomi falls ill, is diagnosed with two diseases and lands in bed awaiting surgery. Knowing she needs an accessible creative outlet, Andrew starts texting her melodies, asking for lyrics. Two dozen songs later, The Civil Union is born. Enthusiastically and strategically, they save up to buy and rent recording equipment, only to have their house broken into and their laptop, containing all of their music, stolen. Not to be defeated at having to start again, they end up creating a more expansive version of the original album, resulting in something they are extremely proud of.
With it's pounding drums, reverb drenched synthesizers and layers of lush harmony, the album speaks directly to the present moment. Written through adversity and pain, their melodic soundscape proves that something truly unifying and beautiful can be created by overcoming trauma together.
