The Crypt was formed in Fish Creek, Wisconsin, in July 1998, after the dissolution of Cryptic, northern Door County's only death metal band. Frontman Nate Yuggoth wanted to continue making heavy music, but with the chronic lack of metal musicians in the vicinity has had to do it mostly alone, with Adam Haste (lead guitars/organ/synthesizer) appearing on nearly all albums, and frequent contributions from Skyler Champeau (vocals) and Dan Smrz (percussion/keyboards).
The Crypt has built a reputation on drastically changing styles from album to album. Though most albums are built on a solid foundation of thrash and death metal mixed with progressive tendecies (as evidenced by the lethal Истребитель and the re-recording of 2007's Victory Through Chaos), there are frequent deviations from this, be it the classic metal infused Odal, the goregeous acoustic album Embers of Limerance, or the ambient/experiemental Beholden to No One.
Many of the Crypt's releases contain collaborations and contributions from a number of local and international musicians to add variety to the song writing.
